A Sony patent, filed December 2008, has turned up that details a method for the PlayStation 3’s Cell chip to translate code from the PS2’s Emotion Engine. This would allow full emulation of PS2 games from any PS3 once it has been updated with the emulation software.
I hope Sony follows through with this patent. I know they were trying to cut costs when they removed the PS2 Emotion Engine from the PS3 but backwards compatibility is an important feature, especially when you have the catalog of titles that the PS2 has.
