Posted by Justin, on December 3rd, 2009 This is just a ridiculous comment regarding games being somehow magically different from films in the home.
And where is the conversation about console devices to lock out children. Industry has parental control systems to assist parents, but at the end of the day it is a matter of real parental control in the home. The systems can help parents, and no one would be so naive to think they would replace supervision.
I think most people are willing to accept that Atkinson has an opinion that differs from the majority of people in our community. It is unfortunate, however, that an individual with such a narrow and misinformed view can shape national policy from such an incredible position of power.
I’m not really clear who (apart from Atkinson’s own personal preference) has claimed that games are more interesting to an adult simply because they contain extreme violence, explicit sexual material or highly offensive language. More so, who is calling for more cruel sex?
This assertion is patronising in the extreme, deciding what is good for all adults and is dripping with moral panic. – Ron Curry, CEO of the Interactive Games & Electronic Association
Nice to see someone stand up to Atkinson and his absurd comments about the R18 video games.

You’ve got to hand it to Electronic Arts, they have come up with a pretty fool proof way to ensure that the vast majority of gamers (at least the male ones) will opt to buy new copies of The Saboteur over used. Kotaku is reporting that each new copy of the title comes with a code that when used will allow the user to download for free the “Midnight Show” DLC, which will add “adult content including: nudity, a V.I.P room and new hiding spots.” According to the report EA will offer the “Midnight Show” DLC for $5 for consumers who didn’t get the code with the game (ie. bought a used copy).
It’s going to be hard to tell how much of an effect this has on used game sales but nudity tends to sell a lot of things in this world and I would bet that it will work for new copies of video games.

In Take-Two’s updated financial earnings forecast the company announced that Max Payne 3 has been pushed back to Q4 2010 (sometime between August and October 2010) from it’s previously announced release window of between Feb and June 2010.
Take-Two didn’t say but I suspect the extra time is needed to give Max a good scrubbing and a beard trim before the game launches.
