Super Mario Bros. Wii within striking distance of outselling Modern Warfare 2 on the 360

Back in early November of last year Reggie Fils-Aime stated that “on a single platform” New Super Mario Bros. Wii would outsell Modern Warfare 2 by the end of January according to NPD data.  Now that we are now 2/3 of the way through that time frame I thought it would be worth taking a look at the NPD sales numbers to see if Mario has a shot of outselling the “Biggest Entertainment Launch in History”.

According to November and December NPD data the current sales break down like this.

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii – 4.21 million units sold (1.39m Nov, 2.82m Dec)
  • CoD Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 – 5.83 million units sold (4.2m Nov, 1.63m Dec)
  • CoD Modern Warfare 2 PS3 – 2.99 million units sold (1.87m Nov, 1.12m Dec)

According to that data Reggie’s claim has already come true with NSMB outselling the PlayStation 3 version of Modern Warfare 2 by 1.22 million units.

Passing the PlayStation 3 is one thing but what is more surprising is that it’s possible that the title will also outsell the Xbox 360 version of MW2 by the end of January.  Only 1.62 million units separate the two titles at this point.  Modern Warfare’s sales are clearly in decline and January sales are likely to be much lower than the 1.63m sold in December.  If Mario’s January sales can stay above 2 million units it just might be enough for the title to pull ahead of MW2 on the 360.

Either way this is going to be a photo finish.
