Miyamoto confirms the obvious, there will be a Super Mario Bros. on the 3DS

From an Iwata Asks feature:

Miyamoto: Yes. So, in the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system.

Iwata: The next stage for the Super Mario Bros. Preservation Society’s activities is the Nintendo 3DS.

Miyamoto: Yes. (laughs) I want to show everyone as soon as possible what the new Super Mario Bros. will be like on the Nintendo 3DS.

I highly doubt that there was anyone who was thinking that Nintendo wouldn’t bring Mario to the 3DS, but I suppose it’s nice to get the confirmation.

Surprise! Nintendo Working On More Pokemon Games For Wii and 3DS

“We are also developing Pokémon related products on the Wii and 3DS. We will gradually over time inform you of them.” – Satoru Iwata

And here I was all worried that we had finally reached the end of the Pokemon franchise. I guess dreams do come true.

Update* Nintendo 3DS eShop, Browser, and DSiWare Transfer Coming to Japan in May

In the same investor briefing that revealed a new Kirby title, Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo 3DS will get its eShop channel as late as May in Japan through a “major software update” that includes the web browser and the ability to transfer DSiWare titles.

It’s likely that the eShop delay until May will only be the case in Japan, as Nintendo has already confirmed that the UK will have the update on launch day.

Update* Looks like this will be a worldwide update and not just Japan:

“The first system update is scheduled for late May, at almost the same time around the world,” president Satoru Iwata said. In addition to the eShop and the internet browser, the May update will also enable the ability to transfer DSiWare titles from a DS to a 3DS system. – Link

Sony looked into a 3D screen for the NGP but decided against it

“In the development process, we had studied the possibility of introducing stereoscopic 3D feature to NGP, but decided not to install it. After careful consideration of our goal of offering users the ultimate portable entertainment experience with a revolutionary user interface we have decided to focus on the features and specs announced today first.”

“SCE will continue to play an important role within Sony group by promoting 3D in tandem with Sony Corporation’s 3D compatible BRAVIA LCD TVs to deliver the sublime 3D entertainment in the living room and without having to go to the cinema. We will continue our effort to provide users with true 3D entertainment experience that only Sony can deliver.” – Sony statement

I was a little bit surprised that the NGP didn’t have some kind of 3D interface, and was not satisfied with their explanation in the statement above as to why it wasn’t included the handheld. Considering their huge push for their Bravia line of 3D TVs I would think that Sony would take every opportunity to promote 3D.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I think I’ve come up with a reasonable explanation as to why Sony would not use 3D in the NGP. Nobody knows for sure but the popular assumption is that Nintendo is getting their 3D screens from Sharp. If that is the case, Sony’s reason for not wanting to use 3D screens in the NGP less to do with their feeling that 3D can’t work in a handheld and more to do with not wanting to have a competitors 3D tech in their device.
