Kinect Sports and Dance Central reach 1m units sold in the US

“Another NPD nugget….Kinect Sports and Dance Central are breakout hits, both selling 1 million units in US alone” – Aaron Greenberg, Chief of Staff for Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft

Sounds like these are LTD sales and not just December. Plus neither one shows up in NPD’s top 10 software for last month and number ten on that list is Need for Speed at 906k.

Harmonix will keep IP rights to Rock Band and Dance Central

Joystiq has learned from unnamed sources that Harmonix will retain the IP rights to Rock Band and Dance Central now that they have left the Viacom family.

I assumed as much when Harmonix made their statement yesterday, but it’s nice to get a confirmation of it. The only thing left to figure out is who will handle publishing rights to both titles.

Analyst disappointed by Kinect software sales, Harry Potter less than 100k, Kinect Sports #12

Wilson [Pacific Crest analyst Evan Wilson] also expressed disappointment in sales of Kinect games. Despite the hype Microsoft’s motion-sensing camera system generated, Wilson said software for the unit totaled sales of $57 million, or about 4 percent of game sales for the month… Electronic Arts’ third-person shooter Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 (the 360 version of which supports Kinect) was another disappointment, as the blockbuster movie tie-in sold fewer than 100,000 copies. – Link

When games are ranked individually by platform, two Kinect titles almost made the top 10. “Dance Central” and “Kinect Sports” were number 11 and 12, according to David Dennis, Xbox group product manager. – Link

I’m not sure what to make of the Dance Central numbers. The Joystiq report makes it sound like Dance Central was #11 in the overall ranking, while this report says it’s #11 in the individual platform ranking. It’s possible that it’s #11 in both but I doubt it.

Dance Central just misses November’s NPD top 10 selling software

Joystiq is reporting that Dance Central ranked in at #11 on NPD’s overall software sales for November. This made it the best selling piece of Kinect software, aside from Kinect Adventures that is bundled with every peripheral.

We don’t have an exact number to attach with this report but it’s position would place it somewhere below 400k in sales (which is what Gran Turismo 5 pulled in) and below whatever Wii Fit Plus sold (it’s in the number 10 slot).

Viacom: We don’t have the expertise and scale for the video game business, there are several potential buyers for Harmonix

“Our decision to exit this business reflect our strategy of focusing entirely on what we do best – make great branded entertainment content and deliver it through a variety of platforms… Harmonix has and will continue to create terrific videogames but for us it is about focus. The console games business requires an expertise and scale that we don’t have. We have taken steps to sell Harmonix and we are in discussions with several potential buyers. The third parties have a different economic view of Harmonix and we believe that it’s an asset that will be worth more to them than it is to us,” – Thomas Dooley, COO of Viacom
