Posted by Justin, on September 30th, 2009 “To oversimplify [why the first Dead Space did not get released in Japan], dismemberment [in video games] is a big issue in Japan. The levels of innards and gore that you see is an issue, and killed bodies is an issue. There’s a clear distinction between what happens to humans and what happens to aliens, even when the aliens look human. It’s a, frankly, tricky landscape.” – Rex Ishibashi, EA Japan
What different cultures find acceptable has always amazed me. Here in the U.S. having someone cut in half in a video game is not a big deal at all but if a virtual nipple makes it’s way on screen it’s time to grab the torch and pitch fork and run the developers out of town.

Glen Schofield, EA studio manager for Dead Space, confirmed on the official EA podcast that the title had been played by three million people but only half that number bought the game new. Schofield didn’t think that the lack of online co-op was the reason that players beat and sold the title, although the team did think about adding the feature.
“We were up against Fallout, which was a 50-hour game to begin with. So, we didn’t look at it and say we have to have online. What we said we’ve got to be bang for the buck.” – Glen Schofield

“We’re bringing core intellectual properties and franchises in categories we think have legs on the Wii platform. A good example of this is Dead Space. We’re bringing a Wii title to the market this year and it is absolutely going to be the quality and fear factor that you got on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC SKUs this past year.” – John Riccitiello, EA CEO
Let’s just hope that it’s a game built from the “bottoms-up” for the Wii and not a downgraded port with added waggle.

“As for titles like Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge, I think you can absolutely expect those titles to come back in one way, shape or form, but they’re not likely to be annual sequels,” – John Riccitiello, Electronic Arts CEO

Guildford, UK – October 24, 2008 – Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today that Dead SpaceTM, the award-winning new action-packed, survival horror game from EA hits shelves today at British retail and reminds parents of the game’s 18 rating. The game will be available for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and PC.
“Dead Space is a bold and often bloody gaming experience filled with tension and terror – this one isn’t for kids,” said Keith Ramsdale, Vice President and General Manager of EA UK, Ireland and Nordics. “We recognize the need to help British parents better understand the age rating system for video games, and 18 means a game is not appropriate for minors. But for adult gamers who crave gruesome action in a survival horror fiction, Dead Space promises to be a big hit!”
