DJ Hero was dubbed a flop on its release too, but what it needed was time for its audience to find it, a price break, and positive word from both friends and reviews to circulate. October and November were soft, but after the holiday, DJ Hero had hit about 800,000 units; today it’s 1.2 million units and counting, all of which come with a turntable controller. That’s not a flop; that’s the long tail at work. – Activision’s Dan Amrich
1.2m isn’t a flop, I will agree with that. However 1.2m spread across three consoles, add in some price drops and the cost to make the game (including licensing the music) and I don’t think you can exactly call it a big success.

Posted by Justin, on February 22nd, 2010 On February 12, the group sued Guitar Hero publisher Activision for allegedly labeling Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero, Guitar Hero Smash Hits, and DJ Hero with patent numbers whose respective patent descriptions don’t cover the scope of the product. Those actions intentionally deceived the public, according to the PCG.
The group also alleged that Activision labeled those games as “patent pending” or “patent applied for” when that was not the case, and said Activision wrongfully put those patent markings on advertising as well.
The PCG is seeking an award of “not more than $500 for each of Defendant’s violations.

Posted by Justin, on January 28th, 2010 Kotaku is reporting a rumor that Activision has contracted Glu Mobile to bring DJ Hero to mobile platforms (iPhone, Android and mobile).
Assuming the rumor is correct, the idea of bringing DJ Hero to the iPhone makes a lot of sense from a control aspect. Maybe not so much from a financial point of view.

Not too surprising that DJ Hero would pull in the most new IP revenue despite it’s relatively low sales numbers, it did launch at twice the price point of the vast majority of the competition. How it stacked up to the competition in terms of profit is a whole other story that Activision left out of the press release.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan 19, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX News Network/ — Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that DJ Hero(TM) was the #1 new intellectual property by revenue in the U.S. and Europe for calendar 2009, according to The NPD Group.
The game has garnered critical acclaim, securing more than 15 Best Music Game Awards in the U.S. alone and was featured in more than two dozen year end “best of” lists including those from Time Magazine, USA Today.com and Official Xbox Magazine.

“…if you’re going to make a commitment to doing something original, the odds are that you’re not going to get it right on the first chance… I think DJ Hero is a really innovative product. I can’t wait for you to see next year’s. That’s the thing; we’re sticking with it. We’ll stick with it and get it right. But it’s going to be less games, better games. That’s our strategy.” – Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
The problem with DJ Hero wasn’t that it is a bad game because it’s not. The problem is that the game revolves around being a DJ, which doesn’t have the widespread appeal of being playing a guitar, and it came out when the music genre is in decline.
