This 4.1m number is as of November 2010 according to the press release. This makes me question if these are really sold numbers or shipped numbers.
Back on Nov. 8th Sony said they “shipped” 1m units to North and Latin America. On Nov. 4th they said they “sold” 250k in the UK.
We have no data on Japan sales but I don’t see how these numbers are adding up to 4.1m units sold, unless these are really shipped numbers.

Revealed in Sony’s Q2 earnings report the company sold 1.5 million PSP units, down 50% from last year.
Since the PSP regularly leads the weekly hardware sales charts in Japan a drop like this can only be attributed to a massive drop in sales in the UK and US.
PS3 – 38m worldwide (5m in Japan 13%)
PSP – 62m worldwide (15m in Japan 24%)
