SCEE president Andrew House announced at GamesCom that the PlayStation 3 has sold 38 million units worldwide since its launch in 2006. 16 million of those sales were attributed to European sales.
Other company sales data revealed at the conference included:
PS3 software sales up 38%
PlayStation Network has a 70% connection rate
PSP sales at 9.9m for the past year
PS2 sales stand at 146m LTD, another 6m are projected for 2010
NEW PLAYSTATION®3 RETAIL SALES ACHIEVE 1 MILLION UNITS WORLDWIDE
Tokyo, September 24, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. today announced that retail sales of its new PlayStation®3 (PS3®) (CECH-2000A) computer entertainment system achieved a total of 1 million units*1 worldwide in the 3 weeks since its launch on September 1, 2009 *2. The expansion of the PS3 platform is being accelerated along with the introduction of more and more new and exciting software titles as well as the enhancement of PlayStation®Network.
As part of Sony’s Q1 earnings report the company released both quarterly and annual global sales data for each of the video game systems. In a surprise turn of events the PlayStation 2 managed to outsell both the PS3 and PSP during the quarter and was the only system to have a sales gain when compared to the same quarter last year.
