I believe there is a Tomb Raider out there that can be done on the Wii, or with the Sony motion controller… Those are cool tools and people really do enjoy them, because you already have an intuition of how you manipulate things and what you can do. I can see a Tomb Raider being made for either that was really good.” – creative director Daniel Neuburger
I can see it too… and play it. It was called Tomb Raider Anniversary. What wasn’t so good was Underworld on the Wii.

“It’s always difficult doing that but you can get stuck doing the same thing over and over. The only real way that I can really effect Lara Croft is to be in charge of a project. More and more as I was working at Crystal, especially on Underworld where I was just doing cinematic work, the reality is the control of the characters is in the hands of the creative directors and the publisher. I think it’s just something you have to learn to realize that there’s no one person really in charge of what goes on with a character and they have a life of their own in the hands of the team.” – Toby Gard, Tomb Raider creator

“Obviously it’s confidential what goes on at Crystal Dynamics… but the situation is that I’m no longer working with them, and I’ve started up my own consultancy business.” – Toby Gard, Tomb Raider creator

We sometimes faced a dilemma where marketing gave us a choice in which a particular demo, at the expense of two weeks of production time, seemed like the better long term choice for the success of the product…
We also had an unusual number of weddings, honeymoons, production babies, and untimely departures on this project throughout the team, but most painfully among the discipline leads.
We lost our art director midway through production; not to another company, but to another industry, so there wasn’t much we could have done about that. We lost our lead designer toward the end of production when she had a baby; also something we couldn’t have done much about (nor would we have wanted to, as the baby is beautiful!). And most tragically, our lead level designer died suddenly during the first half of production. – Eric Lindstrom, Underworld creative director

In Eidos’ half-year financial report the company reveled some sales data for Tomb Raider: Underworld. Global sales came in at approximately 1.5 million units. This was below the company’s internal forecasts, however the title is currently outselling both Anniversary and Legend (Legend sold just over 4.5 million units during it’s lifespan).
