Aug. 12, 2010 – Nintendo sold more than 650,000 video game systems in July – more than any other company – according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks sales of video game products in the United States. The Nintendo DS™ family of systems sold nearly 400,000 in July, and Nintendo’s Wii™ console marked its 45th consecutive month of more than 250,000 units sold with July sales of nearly 254,000. These tallies bring the 2010 U.S. sales totals through the end of July for Nintendo DS to more than 3.4 million and Wii to more than 2.71 million.

Five of the top 10 best-selling games of July play on Nintendo systems. NPD: Counting StarCraft II launch overall industry sales up 4 percent in July

Overall

“While video game retail sales show a very slight decline versus last July, we have to consider the success of Starcraft II this month, which helped the PC games category to realize a 103% increase in dollars over last July. PC Games and video game industry sales combined for an increase of 4% in revenues as compared to July’09.”

Hardware

“The PS3 and the Xbox 360 platforms both saw significant increases over July’09. In fact, Xbox 360 was the top-selling hardware platform for the month, driven by sales of the new slim format SKU. It’s the first time since September ’07 (Halo 3 launch) that the 360 was the top-selling hardware platform.”

Software

“The top selling video game for the month, combining platforms, was NCAA Football 11 at 692K units. Achieving even better results this month was Starcraft II (PC), which sold 721K units at retail in July.”

“LEGO Harry Potter was the second best-selling game for the month with 401K units across all platforms. It bested its intro month sales in June of 355K, although it must be noted it released late in June. In just over a month at retail, it has already sold enough to put it just outside of the top 20 games year-to-date.”

Accessories

“The Xbox 360 1600 point card was the best-selling accessory SKU for the fifth consecutive month. The general success of the Points and Subscriptions cards category within Accessories points to the activity that is happening in the industry outside the traditional retail channel.” – NPD analyst, Anita Frazier

NPD: PC digital download purchases almost even with PC boxed sales

NPD Group claimed Wednesday that full-game PC digital download purchases reached 21.3 million in the U.S. during 2009, nearly even with 23.5 million physical unit buys, signifying an important shift in purchasing habits.

The tracking firm said that, according to its estimates, PC digital downloads represented 48 percent of unit sales for PC last year, and accounted for 36 percent of dollar sales.

I don’t know why I thought this but for some reason I assumed that PC digital downloads had already surpassed PC boxed sales.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 June Sales Down 68 Percent Compared to Last Year, Analyst Blames Man-Whoring

“[Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 was down 68% in first month sales compared to last year] The 86 per cent decline on the Wii was particularly catastrophic… Although this is probably due in part to the fact that last year’s version shipped bundled with Nintendo’s new MotionPlus controller, we are concerned that Woods’ scandal woes may have permanently damaged the sales potential of what we believe to be EA’s third most important sports franchise, behind Madden and FIFA.” – Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz

Well we now have some conflicing reports about Tiger Woods sales for June, VentureBeat claimed they were down 32%. In either case things are not good but I don’t think this has much to do with Tiger’s man-whoring ways.

The inclusion of the MotionPlus controller in TW 10 certainly spiked sales above the norm and I agree with Creutz that this has something to do with the drop in sales for 11. However, the strong performance of Tiger Woods PGA Online indicates to me that golf gamers don’t care about the scandal very much.

My best guess is that a lot of TW 10 buyers are still happy with that version and don’t see a need to upgrade every year.

Skate 3 and Green Day: Rock Band June NPD sales revealed, it’s not good

“Skate 3 sold a disappointing 253K units during its first two months in release, down 40 per cent from the two-month total for Skate 2 in early 2009. Finally, June release Green Day: Rock Band sold a paltry 82K units across three platforms.” – Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz

But MTV Games said Green Day would outperform Beatles Rock Band…

NPD data shows discounted Xbox 360 SKUs outsold new slim model

“It is clear that the sales spike for the 360 was largely temporary, as clearance items accounted for around 60 per cent of total sales [Xbox 360 S 40%, Xbox 360 Arcade 35%], and it is not clear that software attached heavily to these purchase,” – Michael Pachter

I figured as much, and would not be surprised to see 360 sales drop off when July’s numbers come out.
